The Official College of Podiatrists of the Community of
Madrid warns of the importance of paying much more attention to our feet in the
summer season. And it is that, at this time of year:
Fungal and bacterial
infections increase . Due
to the heat and humidity, these proliferate on beaches, swimming pools, beach
bars, hotel carpets ...
Plantar
fasciitis and other injuries are skyrocketing in
the podiatrist's office due to the use of flip-flops.
The continued use of permanent and semi-permanent polishes damages the nails, also
causing an increase in infections.
HOW TO PREVENT FOOT FUNGUS
At this time, the feet
are more at risk of infection for two main reasons: we
often take off our shoes in swimming pools and beaches, which is very easy to
spread.
And we sweat more, which facilitates the proliferation of
fungi.
There are many
types of fungal infections or mycoses, but one of the most common is
athlete's foot .
You will
recognize it because
it causes itching, painful fissures, bad smell and scabs between the
toes and also on the sole of the foot . If it
happens to you, go to the dermatologist so it doesn't spread. It
is treated with local antifungals and, in severe (rare) cases, orally.
To keep fungi at
bay, keep in mind:
Control sweat . There are specific
antiperspirant deodorants that clog the pores through which sweat comes out to
a certain degree, thus controlling moisture.
Sanitize if
necessary . If
you see cracks between your fingers, apply an antiseptic to them to facilitate
healing and prevent infection.
Dries very well
between your toes after showering . If you have a tendency to suffer from fungus, use a drying
product such as talcum powder before putting on shoes.
A foot deodorant
or drying powder can help
Use flip flops or rubber slippers in swimming pools ,
saunas, gyms and public areas where you are in direct contact with
moisture. It is very important to avoid going barefoot in these
environments.
- Opt for footwear that allows
perspiration ,
if possible made of leather or natural materials. This way you avoid
scratches and humidity. Try to avoid tight-fitting sneakers.
- If you wear socks, buy them
made of natural fabrics , change them daily and sprinkle them
with an antifungal if you have a tendency to sweat your feet.
- Keep your feet
hydrated. Dryness
favors foot wounds and also the appearance of contagious microorganisms.
